PAT Testing

PAT Testing, which stands for "Portable Appliance Testing", or to give it its' new name, "Electrical Equipment Testing" (EET), is the process by which a qualified person carries out testing of electrical equipment.

PAT testing should be carried out in order to ensure that the electrical equipment that you have on site (or in your home) remains safe to use. From a business perspective this testing ensures that the business and employees remain safe from the potential risk of fire and/or electrical shock, as well as complying with the Electricity at Work regulations 1989.

PAT (EET) testing is not a legal requirement as many people believe, but it is a requirement in the sense that many landlords, (both commercial and domestic) require such testing to be carried out in order to comply with the Electricity at Work regulations 1989. In addition many insurers may also require this testing to be carried out in order for them to continue insuring both the landlord and/or tenant.

In addition many festival or event organisers now require that their on site traders have proof that any electrical appliances and/or electrical equipment that they use is PAT tested and is therefore compliant and safe to use. Again this may be an insurance requirement.

At 14 SERVICES we have fully qualified and certificated engineers who can carry out the required PAT testing for you. We are able to visit your premises (or household) at a time convenient to you in order to test all your electrical appliances/equipment. We can if required carry out our services at evenings and/or weekends if this is more convenient for you.

Our engineers are also able to carry out Microwave Leakage Tests which involves the testing of your microwave for potentially harmful radiation leaks which can happen if the door seals of the microwave become faulty or if the microwaves shielding becomes compromised in any way. The testing involves our engineer using a microwave leakage detector to detect any issues. If the microwave passes this test an emissions label is then affixed to the appliance showing the levels detected and that it is suitable for use.

We will leave you with a complete record of what has been tested and more specifically what has passed or failed. In addition we can also affix a pass or fail sticker to each appliance which will clearly indicate that the item tested has passed or failed and when the item (if passed) should be tested again.

We are also able in some instances able to carry out on the spot minor repairs, ie: affixing a new plug to an appliance if the plug that we are testing does not meet the criteria to pass the test.

It is also worth mentioning that all sellers, even private sellers who attend car boot sales or who sell on Facebook or Ebay etc. MUST ensure that the goods they sell are safe in order to conform to the Consumer Protection Act 1987. This includes the sell of electrical goods. PAT testing is therefore essential to prove the sell of safe electrical goods.

Correct PAT testing does not just mean plugging your appliance into an appliance tester as some people may do or believe. Proper PAT testing does indeed involve that but there is much more to a proper PAT test than just that. The correct procedure involves both a visual and physical inspection by a qualified person as well as testing the correct, secure and safe placement of wires in plugs etc.
